ARTIST'S STATEMENT:
My paintings and collages of abstractions and faces are done in a contemporary pop-modern style, with a fearless approach to color and pattern and an unapologetic use of humor. The oil paintings are layered with colorful underpaintings, and designs are scratched into each layer to produce a series of interconnected surface designs with varying approaches to depth and space. These can include everything from abstract linework and Arabic influenced (learned from an Arabic course years ago) abstract calligraphy to intricately drawn paisleys and floral motifs.
Color and pattern are very important in my work, and can range from bold, bright color schemes to subdued earth tones.
I have been greatly influenced by my Southern upbringing (Memphis, Tennessee) and my exposure to Southern music, my grandmothers' beautiful quiltmaking habits, gospel culture, and Outsider Art (Howard Finster). I enjoy the works of Edward Gorey, Tim Burton, Tim Biskup, and Roz Chast; Southwestern art and culture (retablos, ex-votos, altars) are a strong reference also, as well as African masks, Arabic works, and Persian miniatures.
I am fascinated with faces and hands, and portraying images of solo figures. Here, some of my greatest influences include such major art historical icons as the Virgen de Guadalupe, the Venus of Willendorf, and the Mona Lisa. Artists whose work I admire include Matisse, Modigliani, Schiele, and Klimt. When dealing with subject matter, my subjects are almost exclusively women. I am interested in the power of the female as an icon and as a figure in society. I am currently also exploring these female images through recycled materials collages and mixed media. My paintings include areas of abstraction which are usually bold color schemes, expressed in spontaneous automatic writing and marks with symbols and Arabic phrases woven into the compositions. Another part of the collage approach I am taking is working with beadwork in executing some of these works.
The oil paintings are in a wide range of sizes: they start at 10x10, my groupings, and the solo pieces generally are 24” X 36” to 60” x 72”, with mostly larger pieces.
